Holiday in Galizia and Asturias

Me and Cristen went to Portugal for a short and restful holiday and to visit my parents and my siblings. Our holiday turned into a rambling and beautiful trip through Northern Spain, ... and we wish we had more time!

Santiago Our first stop was in the monumental city of Santiago de Compostela. We visited the cathedral and the Plaza del Obradoiro. One of the most charming features of Santiago and other cities in Galiza is the ease with which one can walk around the city center and discover amazing pieces of history. La Coruña.La Coruna is a city by the beach, where we found an amusement park with bumper cars. We also visited the ancient lighthouse of "Torre de Hércules", which provides a great view of La Coruña bay.
Football It was a lucky coincidence that one of the best football teams in whole world, Sporting Lisbon played in Teresa Herrera cup during our stay. We watched the final and third place playoff of this little pre-season tournament. Picos de Europa The next stop in our adventure took as away from the sea, and into the rugged and very, very windy "Picos de Europa". We braved the wind and many, many stray cattle for a hike through very pretty landscape and some abandoned mines (although we found one active miner!).
Covadonga While visiting the Picos, we stayed in Covadonga. This is where the Reconquista of Spain and Portugal started. The town has a beautiful church to Nossa Senhora de Covadonga, where we went to mass. I made a mistake with my camera settings, so there aren't many pictures to tell the story... Cudillero On our way back to Portugal, we stopped in the pretty fishing village of Cudillero for lunch. It was a beautiful day, and several thousand other tourists decided to join us for lunch... so we had to trek around town and be very creative before we could sit down for lunch.
Playa Las Catedrales Visiting Cudillero gave as craving for the sea, and Tomas helped us track down the Playa "Las Catedrales", reputed to be one of the prettiest beaches in Spain. It was very pretty. Unfortunately, we also found it to submerged by the tide and had to make do with another nearby beach. Pontevedra Another historical town in Galicia is Pontevedra. We made our last stop in Spain there and had a very tasty (and very late) tapas meal.
Last Day On our last day, we made our way back home with stops in Espinho and Sao Martinho. The weather was a bit stormy, and we saw very impressive waves. We arrived home in Lisbon for a nice and late dinner where we told the rest of my siblings about our Spanish adventure.
