This document provides the details to install and use the CSG printers that are available to the group:
Note: Both printers are controlled by PHISA-owned machines and are set up on the Unix machines automatically. You must setup the printers on your Windows machines. The printers can be access via Netware, but can also be accessed without having Netware installed.
1. You may start this process two ways - by finding the Printers section
of the Control Panel and choosing 'Add a Printer'.
Otherwise you can use the Netware disk and go through Setup with it.
If you use to use the Netware disk you'll need to find it on your machine. On my machine it is the R: drive, but these drives appear to have a mind of their own - your drive letter may differ from what you see here. Find the driver directory and double click on SETUP.EXE. In this example we are installing the NT version as you can see from the path. Be sure to choose the correct operating system. Once you get going the install is pretty straight forward - with a few places where you can get it wrong. The following notes will guide you at those places.
2. This is a network printer. It is not directly connected to
some Windows machine.
3. Now you need to find the printer on the network.
You don't get to make up this name - PHISA already has.
There are thousands of printers, so note the ones we selected in the
pictures above.
If you know the proper name for the printer, you don't need to browse
for the printer - you may enter it directly.
The full name for the 8100 is \\MICHIGAN\M4125_HP8100.SPH.UMich -
- to be entered precisely as shown here.
If this name does not work, continue to browse the network and see
if you can find the printer you want. Sometimes the names get changed.
4. Continue with the install as you'd expect. In the summer of 2003 the
install process was broken and you were are prompted for a path
as shown. The correct path should be .../HP_8100DN//WINNT
(just drop the '/DISK1' part).
If Windows can already find the drivers, you will not be prompted
to provide the path to anything.
5. Continue with the install as you'd expect. When this completes, you'll have a print queue called \\MICHIGAN\M4125_HP8100.SPH.UMich. Test your new print queue by trying to print something.
1. The install for the 4550 for Windows is exactly like that for the HP8100 with these exceptions:
1. Find the Printers section of the Control Panel and choose 'Add a Printer'.
2. Unlike with Netware and despite the fact the printer is actually driven by another machine, for Windows, this is a local printer. Go figure.
3. Now you must "create a new port" by selecting this as an
"LPR Port". This means the printer will be access using Unix protocols.
Specify the machine to be used to access the printer,
prntsrv.sph.umich.edu and the printer name, HP8100_M4125.
These values can be found in the file /etc/printers.conf on Solaris systems.
If you don't see "LPR Port" then you must install support for "Other Network File and Print Services" as described at the Microsoft site in http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/home/using/productdoc/en/howto_optional_nw_components.asp. (This was found by visiting the Microsoft web site and searching for "lpr printer".)
You can probably choose any of these and be satisfied. Sometimes people specifically want a PostScript printer - as they might get Postscript files from some other site. If this is the case, you may want a second version of the printer which is defined for Postscript and your normal printer is PCL.
5. Continue with the install as you'd expect. When this completes, you'll have a print queue called HP8100_M4125. Test your new print queue by trying to print something.1. The install for the 4550 for Windows is exactly like that for the HP8100 shown above with these exceptions:
This printer is already installed on your Unix machine. It is known by several names, but the easiest and shortest is printer '33'. Here are a few print related commands you may find useful.

You can set your default printer by setting the environment variable PRINTER in your .cshrc (or .tcshrc) file. The command for the 8100 would be 'setenv PRINTER 33'. You can always override commands by specifying another printer name/number. Here are some commands you might find useful:
