Undergraduate Opportunities

The Program is teaming with the UM Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) to place undergraduate students in the labs and research groups of our Training Program faculty. Rising sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduates from groups historically underrepresented in the humanities, arts, social sciences, engineering, and physical or natural sciences are eligible to take part. Genome science SROP students will be involved in all the standard SROP activities and take advantage of the existing SROP travel and training infrastructure. They also have unique activities that are designed specifically for them. These include: (a) dual mentorship, in which a faculty member will team with a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow in their lab to mentor the SROP student; (b) weekly lunches in which SROP students and mentors will discuss their work and experiences in an informal environment; and (c) tours of relevant labs and research groups. Through these activities, our SROP students will become more fully acquainted with the academic and research environment of the University, and become more knowledgeable about opportunities for graduate school and career paths in genome science.
